“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the Kingdom of heaven”

Who may enter the Kingdom of Heaven? In Matthew 7:21, 24-27 we learn it isn’t just anyone who calls himself a Christian.

Jesus said to his disciples:
Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’
will enter the Kingdom of heaven,
but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

“Everyone who listens to these words of mine and acts on them
will be like a wise man who built his house on rock.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
But it did not collapse; it had been set solidly on rock.
And everyone who listens to these words of mine
but does not act on them
will be like a fool who built his house on sand.
The rain fell, the floods came,
and the winds blew and buffeted the house.
And it collapsed and was completely ruined.”

The lesson here is simple. Just because you call Jesus “Lord,” just because you call yourself a Christian, doesn’t mean you are fit to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Only when you do the will of the Father do you earn entry.

Many are they who call themselves Christians but do not act like Christians. They spout many versus of the Bible, often Old Testament versus and the writings of the apostles. Once in a while they will quote from the Gospels, but only in short, convenient sound bites. Yet seldom do they show that they understand Jesus’ core messages. Yet they try to claim the high ground.

Jesus says to know He Himself is to know the Father and to know the Father is to know Jesus. Their will is the same. And how do you know their will? You read and study the Gospels. You read Jesus’ words and of His deeds.

Woe to those who claim the title but do little to earn it. For they will be turned away at the gates of Heaven, which they least expect.

Jesus teaches above all else love. As a result, He also teaches respect, compassion, and mercy and serving others. Also as a result, He teaches faith and repentance. Through love, all things are possible.

Call out, “Lord, Lord,” but more important, do God’s will as Jesus teaches it. For then you may enter the Kingdom of Heaven.
